Gigapixel imaging and FOV expansion

Optotune enables gigapixel imaging by expanding resolution, field-of-view, and depth of focus for a spectrum of machine vision systems. By combining an Optotune 2D fast steering mirror and a focus tunable lens a unique gigapixel imaging system is obtained. The 2D mirror is used to select a small area of interest (AOI) within a large field of view (FOV), while the liquid lens allows to quickly adapt the focus. This combination replicates the principle of the human eye.

Extending the FOV while maintaining high resolution is crucial for a variety of applications. For example, in public surveillance of train stations or airports, a large scene needs to be imaged with the required resolution to do detailed object detection or face recognition. Another example is traffic sign detection in autonomous driving, which benefits from FOV expansion by enabling to read signs at a larger distance.

Face recognition

Combine FOV expansion with face-recognition and you can “zoom-in” on individual faces within a crowd of people.
